public realm & placemaking
Infrastructure shapes behaviour.
Physical infrastructure is economic infrastructure.
If the Inner City is to be walkable, investable and inclusive, its streets and squares must be designed intentionally, not left to evolve by default.
Global precedents demonstrate that high-quality public realm investment increases footfall, retail turnover, tourism appeal and investor confidence. Well-designed streets reduce crime perception, increase dwell time and support small enterprise growth.
To design, upgrade and maintain high-quality public spaces that:
- Improve pedestrian experience and accessibility
- Increase safety perception and comfort
- Stimulate retail and hospitality activity
- Support informal and small-scale trade
- Build long-term civic pride

This is not cosmetic spend.
It is long-term spatial value creation.
Funds are ring-fenced for public space infrastructure, micro-infrastructure and a pilot-to-permanence delivery model.

The quality of a city is ultimately measured at street level. It is found in the comfort of a public bench, the safety of a well-lit route, the vitality of a market square and the confidence people feel when choosing to walk rather than drive. These seemingly small interventions have an outsized influence on how a city performs socially, culturally and economically.
Working alongside the City of Cape Town, property owners, businesses and civic partners, The Mission provides an independent platform capable of identifying opportunities, coordinating investment and delivering visible improvements in the public realm.
For funders, this represents an opportunity to play a direct role in shaping the future character, accessibility and economic resilience of one of Africa's most important urban centres. Around the world, cities that prioritise placemaking outperform those that view infrastructure purely as a municipal responsibility.
