01Why this fund

Small enterprise is a core driver of Inner City vitality.

Independent shops, cafés, makers and service providers create the daily life of a city and sustain the human-scale economy that gives neighbourhoods identity and resilience. Yet small businesses face rising barriers to entry, from rental costs to limited access to infrastructure, networks and visibility.

Global cities increasingly support curated entrepreneurial ecosystems that allow small businesses to test, grow and collaborate.

02Purpose of the fund

To support the growth of small independent Inner City businesses that:

  • Strengthen the local retail and service economy

  • Increase street-level vibrancy and activity
  • Support collaboration and knowledge sharing

This is not retail promotion.

It is investment in a resilient local economy.

07Why support this fund

The character of a city is defined by the people willing to take risks within it. Independent retailers, café owners, makers, artisans and entrepreneurs create the experiences that give neighbourhoods their identity and make cities worth exploring.

Mission for Inner City Cape Town recognises that small businesses are not simply economic actors. They are city builders. They occupy vacant spaces, activate streets, create jobs and contribute to the diversity that makes urban environments resilient.

Through test-trading opportunities, collaborative retail programmes, business development initiatives and market activations, The Mission seeks to lower barriers to entry and create pathways for locally owned enterprises to grow. The strongest urban economies are built on a combination of major institutions and thriving independent businesses.
