One table, one street, one afternoon
For Mandela Day 2026 a single long table ran down Bree Street. Not a market and not a stage: a table, chairs and a meal, set out on a public road so that people who share a city but rarely share a table could sit down next to each other for an afternoon.
The langtafel was put together with Community Chest and Young Urbanists, with Mission for Inner City among the partners behind it.
The idea is the simplest one in placemaking, and the hardest to argue with. A street is public space. The quickest way to prove it is to eat in the middle of one.
