Bree Street Sundays

Car-free Sundays all season long. Bree Street becomes a pedestrian-friendly zone every Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

01THE STORY

One of Cape Town's most food-centric streets, handed back to people

Bree Street is getting into summer mode with car-free Sundays all season long. Inspired by the Open Streets Cape Town movement, this Young Urbanists NPC initiative gained mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis' support to close Bree Street to vehicles and make it a pedestrian-friendly zone every Sunday between 10am and 5pm.

The closure covers the entire street from Wale to Strand, including Shortmarket Street. Cafés spill onto the tar, kids cycle down the centre line, and the street becomes what it always wanted to be: public space.
